Seeing the Light
(2008-2009)

I have chosen ten 10-year-old Jewish girls, and invited them to light Sabbath candles. They have each been reminded of the ancient custom of lighting Friday night candles while holding their hands over their eyes. Using the artifice of tiny sparklers planted into the lit candles, I have dared each of them to peek through their covered eyes and embrace the luminous reflections of light, with a gaze that penetrates the camera’s eye.

The Hand Series (2008)

Each hand is imaged as a clay canvas and embedded with an imprint of culture and nature.

It is as if the hand has morphed and the fls esh become internalized into a kind of evolutionary

second skin.

 The Beautiful Boys Series (2006-7)

Suddenly one summer, I found myself surrounded by 12-year-old boys, including my own son.  I suspended each of them in a pool of water; caught in a state of transformation on the cusp of manhood. Boy as boy for a very brief last moment; each one's vulnerability exposed in a moment of unconscious beauty.

All Ears Series (2006)

Examining the distinct uniqueness of the human ear, I set out to study the differences
in the miracles of design. Instead, I found an iconic, almost mythic continuity.
An assortment of ear portraits, isolated against a backdrop of altered landscapes.
The project incorporates a
mysterious whispered audio loop.

self/cell (2005-2006)

A  book of poetry with

            IMAGES  BY ALINE MARE
TEXT : BY OLIVIA E. SEARS

Spider Woman Press
Ojai, California 2006

"This book leads us through labyrinths of wonderment and dismay… yielding intricate insights, responses, and images, all tied together and articulated with the delicacy and strength of a cicada’s singing wings."
From the foreward by Susan Griffin, author of A Chorus of Stones, Woman and Nature, and What Her Body Thought

"What a testament to artistic collaboration this stunning book is! Entwined with the elegance of DNA, Mare’s haunting images and Sears’ precise and lyrical language result in a fusion both immediate and resonant: image and word, beauty and breath. "
Linda Bierds, author of The Seconds and The Profile Makers, MacArthur Foundation Fellow for Poetry, Pushcart Prize winner

"self/cell  offers an alchemical union, a text/photo-synthesis, intertwining poetry and image, language and visual art. Through this fusion, art and science conjoin to examine fundamental mysteries at the core of existence."
Kathy Brew, award-winning videomaker and Co-Director of the Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival at the American Museum of Natural History
